The Swiss Delegation's Success in Hong Kong
From the 22nd until the 31st of July 2024, the International Economics Olympiad took place in Hong Kong. The Swiss Delegation was there to represent the Country and prove their economics skills against students from 53 nations. And what a success it was: the team returned to Switzerland with two silver and one bronze medal!
Thanks to their outstanding individual performances at the National Economics Olympiad, Benjamin Thut, Ruhi Pungaliya, Lukas Trösch, Elisa Maxhara and Silvio Scherrer (pictured from left to right) qualified for the International Economics Olympiad. They started their trip to Hong Kong on 21 July, where they first paid a visit to the Swiss consulate in Hong Kong. In an exciting exchange, they learnt about the economic and diplomatic cooperation between Hong Kong and Switzerland.
After this unique welcoming, the young people began their adventure of the National Economics Olympiad. In the individual competition they had to prove their skills in a written exam on economic questions and a financial literacy test. The supreme discipline was the group competition: in 24 hours, the Swiss delegation had to analyse the crisis in the Hong Kong housing market in a business case and then present their solutions to a jury.
The five business enthusiasts all showed how extraordinary their knowledge is. Ruhi Pungaliya won a bronze medal and Benjamin Thut and Lukas Trösch even earned silver.
In addition to the exams, the students had the opportunity to get to know Hong Kong and its culture better. Excursions, leisure activities, workshops and exchanges with other participants made the International Economics Olympiad a once-in-a-lifetime educational experience.
